The Modular Synthesizer

This has got to be one of the slowest ways to create synthetic sound, however it's also very rewarding, kind of like growing your own food.

I've spent a couple of years catching up on my electronics, and another year studying synth circuits, and I now have a few prototype modules. Anyway, I think it's a project that might take a couple of decades to get anywhere, so I've got some time.

I'm going for a moog-style design with some additions and subtractions. Nothing too fancy or modern, just good old seventies technology. Something I hope I'm able to grasp... A few oscillators here and there with some filters and some other goodies should do it. No MIDI.

Hopefully it'll look something like this one day...

Native Instruments Reaktor

So this is the much quicker way to create sound. Reaktor is a fantastic program for sound creation and editing. It allows virtually anything within sound synthesis, sampling and effects, and you can choose to design and build everything yourself or use pre-built ensembles and instruments.

When designing yourself, there's a wide array of modules available and you can also build core-modules which puts you in the driver seat of a mathematical dragster. Everything is connected via virtual wires or internal send/receive signals, and the results are mind-blowing.

It is extremely complex and it takes a lot of time, but if you want to learn about sound, music creation, math and logic, it is worth every minute...
